WNBA upgrades foul on Caitlin Clark by Chennedy Carter, fines Angel Reese for no postgame interview

On Sunday, the WNBA upgraded a foul committed by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation after a review. The incident occurred during the third quarter of Saturday’s game, in which the Fever narrowly defeated the Sky 71-70. Carter delivered a shoulder hit to Clark, knocking her to the floor before an inbound pass. The officials initially called it an away-from-the-ball foul and did not review it further, deeming it a common foul at the time.

"I wasn’t expecting it," Clark said post-game. "It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did."

Carter declined to comment on the incident or on Clark after the game.

Additionally, the WNBA fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for not making herself available to the media after the game. The Chicago Sky organization was also fined $5,000 for failing to ensure compliance with the league’s media policies.

The WNBA has the authority to reclassify fouls or upgrade them to flagrant fouls post-game. Players can be fined or suspended based on flagrant foul points accumulated during the season. However, Carter did not receive any further penalties beyond the foul reclassification.

Indiana coach Christie Sides commended Clark for maintaining her composure despite the physical play she has encountered this season.

"We’re just going to keep sending these possessions to the league, and these plays, and hopefully they’ll start taking a better look at some of the things we see happening," Sides said. "I’m just happy that Caitlin handled it the way she did. It’s tough to keep getting hammered the way she does and not get rewarded with free throws or foul calls. She’s continued to fight through that. I really appreciate that from her and am really proud of her."

Clark concluded the game with 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Reese contributed eight points and 13 rebounds.
